  • How to change Hard Disk's Volume Serial Number (Volume ID) Last updated on March 3rd, 2016. The Volume Serial Number (also known as VSN) is a unique serial number that is assigned to an optical disk (CD or DVD) or a hard drive after formatting.
  • A serial number is an identifying code assigned to a piece of hardware. All electronic storage devices, including memory cards, have such a number. If you have reason to change the serial number on your memory card, you will need the VolumeID utility.

Whenever your Windows OS formats a hard disk drive, it assigns a new generated serial number to the drive. This serial number, as opposed to the hardware.

Introduction

While Windows NT/2000 and Windows 95 and 98's built-in Label utilitylets you change the labels of disk volumes, it does not provide anymeans for changing volume ids. This utiltity, VolumeID, allows you tochange the ids of FAT and NTFS disks (floppies or hard drives).

Usage: volumeid <driveletter:> xxxx-xxxx

Note that changes on NTFS volumes won't be visible until the nextreboot. In addition, you should shut down any applications you haverunning before changing a volume id. NT may become confused and thinkthat the media (disk) has changed after a FAT volume id has changed andpop up messages indicating that you should reinsert the original disk(!). It may then fail the disk requests of applications using thosedrives.
